Transitioning to a Paid Campus Activiites Board
Posted by Emily North on March 22, 2022 at 10:30 amDoes anyone have experience they can share regarding transitioning from electing to hiring Campus Activities Board members??
During/post Covid our current Campus Activiites Board is experiencing absenteeism and lack of professionalism. I’d like to hire qualififed individuals instead of electing students in order to run the large programs we are slated to offer.——————————

Hi!
I’m also curious if anyone has any info on this as we are hoping to migrate the same way. A few years back, we switched from elections to interviews and I can provide some info on applications etc. but it is still currently unpaid.

Hello,?
At my previous institution we made 4 official part time positions for our CAB Executive Board students. There were also some volunteer opportunities and we had small scholarships we could offer them for successful completion of their duties. I hired these students just like any other part time positions and paid them out of our service and activities fee account. What specific questions do you have that I can maybe help with?? 🙂

Hi Lauren,?
Thanks for offering to answer my questions.?1. What was the student response (if any) to this change??
2. What was the adminstrative respond (if any) to this change??
3. What challenges were you seeking to address in implementing this change? Were these challenges addressed via implementing this change??
(For context- the challenges I am seeking to address are absenteeism, failure to attract qualiifed students via elections, students not being interested/committed to taking on an unpaid position.)thanks

I wanted to provide our experience…
- What was the student response (if any) to this change?
- Students were excited for this change (from unpaid to paid positions). We offer paid positions for the Cabinet and Executive team (i.e. President, VP of Mktg, VP of Membership and 4 committee chairs). When previous members heard of the change they were a bit jealous of the new infrastructure. Positions are based from June – May; and are year-round positions. The hiring team has also been consistent with ensuring that retention is at the forefront of the hiring plan; students should be available for the full academic year to be in one of the higher positions (Pres, VP of Mktg or VP of Membership).
- What was the adminstrative respond (if any) to this change?
- Leadership was skeptical at first and allowed us to pilot this program for one year; in seeing how effective it was we were allowed to adopt it moving forward. Prior to us having the paid positions, our office would hire student assistants to help with tasks for the Campus Activities Board, but it was noted that they were the ones doing the brunt of the work; while the members were just showing up to events and taking the credit. Events have been better planned and organized and our students, as well as advisors are more involved in the process from start to finish.
- What challenges were you seeking to address in implementing this change? Were these challenges addressed via implementing this change?
(For context- the challenges I am seeking to address are absenteeism, failure to attract qualiifed students via elections, students not being interested/committed to taking on an unpaid position.)- We were trying to address lack of participation and commitment to the organization, from chairs and committee members. In making this change, students were now being held accountable for their actions and being able to connect with departments and other campus organizations during regular business hours. Tasks have been completed in a timely manner, we have been able to keep students at 19 hours per week; and have been able to provide additional training opportunities for them during business hours. Additionally, the organizations advisors are also their supervisors so they have been able to develop strong connections and bond with them. We recruit from within the organization whenever possible, but if that is not an option or students are not interested, we do open up the positions to the student body. This has also allowed us to hire students that would not have been involved if it were not for these positions.

Hi Emily,?
We have fully transitioned our Campus Activities Board executive team (Pres, VPs and Committee Chairs) to paid positions and we have definitely seen a shift in how they operate and the time and effort put into events and activities.? I’d be happy to chat with you and others that may be curious as to how we did this. In the two years or so that we have been operating like this we also shifted another department organization, Civic Engagement Alliance, to this model.——————————
