TEDx

    Hello-

I am looking to see what other campuses have an established TEDx group.? We just received a new organzation proposal to start TEDxUniversity of Rochester and it appears as though there are a lot of policies and guidelines to navigate that could be challenging for a student organization.? If you have TEDx on your campus, is it a student organiation or facilitated through a department?? Any challenges that you have faced?? Any benefits you have seen by having TEDx?

    Thanks-
    Laura

We have hosted a TEDx program at Iowa State in the past–it was canceled in spring 2020 due to COVID and we never brought it back. It was a lot of work and we were seeing interest from students drop off so we feel the TEDx trend may be past its peak. It was a departmental program through our Student Engagement office and did not really have students or student organizations formally involved in the planning. Although I started here in fall 2019 and so haven’t seen the full cycle, it is my understanding there are a lot of policies and guidelines to follow and everything must be done very by the book. Funding can be a challenge because for the university license level you typically aren’t allowed to sell tickets and/or there is a limit on audience size. So the group would need to secure funding for the venue and production. Production costs can be high due to the stringent requirements. Recruiting, selecting, and rehearsing speakers is also an involved process. I’m sure it could be done well by a group of motivated students, but we have gone away from it due to the waning interest and intense staff commitment. We have chosen to focus our staff time in other ways and we have not received any feedback wondering what happened to TEDx or if we are bringing it back.

    Hello Laura,

We have Tedex, on our campus.  The started as a general RSO but transitioned to a department recognized student organization.  The contact person is Mike Armintrout at Purdue, marmintr@purdue.edu.  I think one of there concerns is ensuring they have someone to go to the Annual or Bi-Annual national conference.

    Thanks

    Hey Laura,

We just had a TEDx organization form on our campus in the spring of 2021 and host their first conference in January of 2022, which ended up being virtual due to the Omicron wave of COVID.? As others in the thread have mentioned the challenges of funding are a big issue due to the specific policy requirements from TED and the nature of such a logistically complex event.? Our group was able to receive some funding from our Student Governing Association but due to limitations in our funding guidelines for certain items like production, etc., they needed to do their own fundraising which was a struggle.? They ultimately relied on a crowdfunding campaign run through our University’s foundation and requests for donations from offices and departments on campus.? After their first conference, myself and my supervisor (who advises our SGA) had discussions with the president of the organization about the longevity of the organization in its current form and she created a proposal to move the organization over to an extension of our digital media studies department to better ensure its long term sustainability.? However, as others have mentioned it will depend a lot on the students running the venture.? Currently the student at its helm is incredibly motivated and passionate about TEDx, but when she graduates this year that interest on our campus may dissipate.? I think it can be an overall positive for a campus, but only if the administrative and financial resources are in place to support the students, since so much is required from the TEDx brand.? Let me know if you have additional questions!

    Hi Laura –
We don’t currently have a TEDx event on our campus, because of the policies and requirements. We have an event called “Speak Up” that students created and started hosting about 5 years ago when the process to receive and maintain a TEDx license was determined to be too complicated. While we miss out on the “network” or the “prestige” of being connected to TED, we have more freedom to do what we want while leveraging the format.?

In a past life, I was actually on the organizing team for TEDxFargo (in Fargo, ND) and can answer questions about working with TED, the license, etc. if you have specifics you’re wondering about.?

      Laura,

We hosted a Tedx University Conference here last year. Myself and staff member in the Provost’s Office helped to plan the event. There are very specific requirements for the application, selection, and implementation of the TedX events. IE: we had to set-up our ballroom shifted 90 degrees for the required camera angles. All of these are easily found online.?

Also, they must have a TedX license which has many requirements and cost. I would encourage that organization to look into those before moving forward. We have the license for the event held within the provosts office for a variety of reasons.

In practice, having the faculty and co-curricular working together is the most productive path for a TedX conference.

      Best of luck!

    Hi Laura,?

Echoing what others have said here. It can be a great benefit to campus and the community but does take a LOT of planning and resources. We did have an organization formed and they struggled keeping it successful. It started within our Entrepreneurship academic program here and had a lot of dedicated faculty support but once it became a full student organization with only the support of our Club Activities Office (also supporting 200+ clubs), it collapsed despite passionate student leadership. I would suggest making sure they have a faculty, staff, or community member (maybe a retiree or alumnus?) that can really put dedicated time and energy into supporting this event. I think if we had that here, it would still be thriving.?
