    Hello!

I oversee all of the programming for our New Student Welcome Week nights. I was wondering if anyone has had any ideas that they’ve done previously that has gone really well. We are a very music based campus, so music events tend not to hold people here. I usually chose to do larger interactive events. Our opener will be a Magician/Mentalist. We are a small campus so the impact is usually 350 people. We’ve down a bounce house night where we do a lot of different kinds of bounce houses in the student center. We also do a Late Night Student Union (UC After Dark) event which has headphone disco, personalized license plate making, a taco bar, etc. Has anyone found that a game show night has gone well and been able to serve a decently sized crowd? If you have any other fun ideas, please share them! I’m historically not a programmer and ended up with most of our large campus programming due to budget cuts, so I’m flexing some new skills!

    Thank you!

    Hi Candice,

For Illinois State University our Welcome Week 2021 schedule is still live on our website. We’ll switch to 2022 information sometime in late May. I’m also attaching our Welcome Week 2019 print schedule.

We have recap videos from Welcome Week 2021 & Welcome Week 2019.

And, we have Flickr photo albums as well:
    Welcome Week 2021
    Welcome Week 2019
    Welcome Week 2018
    Welcome Week 2017
    Welcome Week 2016
    Welcome Week 2015

I know our campuses are very different, but hopefully this will give you some inspiration.

If you have any follow up questions, please feel free to reach out.

    Hello Candice,

If your campus is smaller I would suggest some events that can be hands on for students. We do a lot of crafty events with our students where they have a takeaway. You can do this through a vendor or save some cash and do it yourself with Amazon and Oriental Trading. There are vendors who will bring in games like the Giant Jenga and Connect4, but also things like a life sized battle ship and basketball, football, soccer toss etc.?
We have also done a ‘Plan It Out’ event where we gave out planners and allowed students to personalize them with a ton of stickers etc. You can even do an quick little handout for them with helpful tips, for success.?
You could look at doing a Resource Fair where you invite other departments. Make it an ice cream social and give the departments/resource tables different toppings to encourage students to visit the tables and get information.
