    Hello all–

We have an anime interest group who likes to actively watch films. The group likes to use the Crunchyroll website, which is quite popular.? How have other schools dealt with film/copyright issues for this?

    Thanks!

    Hi Brian,?
We have an Anime Association here on our campus. They were planning to do a movie night as well and we told them they had to have the rights. The club reached out to Crunchyroll and they said they were good to go. The only stipulation was that they could not charge an entrance fee for the viewing. They provided the e-mails too. You may just need to have them e-mail the support e-mail and have them be sure.?

If you have any questions just let me know!

Copyright gets so tricky and seems more complicated these days! I too ask the club (we have anime and other film-based clubs) to reach out for permissions and instructions of how to proceed, and explain the reasoning. Most times they are able to show me something in “writing” (email) or they never hear a response. We try our best and generally speaking if it is kept within the club, so not advertised publicly what they are showing, it is ok within the educational setting. And we keep funds available if there are costs that they will incur.

One word of caution to share with student organizations is that the educational exemption does not apply outside of the classroom setting–it is very narrowly constructed.? The face-to-face teaching exemption requires that the content only be shown to individuals registered for the class and shown in a space designated for instruction.? Any other use requires public performance permission/licensing from the copyright holder or their legal designee (like a film distributor.)? An email from Crunchyroll indicating they are the rightsholder for the content in your region granting permission should be sufficient documentation for your files should there be a future inquiry.??
