    Hi everyone-

We are looking for some examples of “non-traditional” homecoming courts and wanted to see if anyone wanted to share about their court! I’m specifically looking for information about structure (number of nominees, number of winners, how they are identified, etc), how they are integrated into events throughout your university’s Homecoming week/weekend, and what recognition they receive (are they invited on the field, do they receive a prize, etc).

And if you have documentaion or other things you want to share but not on the thread, feel free to email me at Shane.Guinan@Colorado.edu

    Shane,

All of our resources are available here. https://www.mnsu.edu/university-life/activities-and-organizations/Homecoming/student-competitions/royalty/. We transitioned to a inclusive Royalty format in 2016.

Let me know if you have any questions.

When I worked at Mount Ida College, our Athletics program hyped up the term Mustang City to reflect our college mascot. We then used the term Mayor of Mustang City for the singular person who would have been termed a Homecoming King or Queen. We would have reduced the total number of eligible folks for the final voting by students and whoever was not named as Mayor was given a title of Musang City Council. All students on the Mustang City Council or the Mayor were then eligible for special events with visiting speakers or could deliver remarks for student events.?

The Mayor would receive a Key to the City, a large ceremonial key we ordered from a website that specialized in those. All City Council members would receive a $50 gift card.

Our court includes a King and Queen (both must be Seniors and may choose to run for either title) along with eight court members, with two representatives from each class year.

We do a “court” for Homecoming and Greek Week and run them similarly.?

We do a Royalty Court. Any organization in good standing can nominate a member. We usually have a brief application and GPA check (usually 2.5 or 2.75). We have hosted interviews before and narrowed our applicant pool to 10-12 students; however, the last few semesters have shifted to allowing all students nominated to be on court as long as they are nominated and meet GPA standard.?

They are told up front events they are expected to be at: Opening, Parade, Tailgate, Closing, etc. We given them something that identifies them as Court and give top two vote getters crown or something that sets them apart (sometimes complementary of the theme). This year we had two men win our top spots.?

    Howyd Shane,?

Hope all is well! Here at Tulane we have a court of 10 graduating seniors or graduate students, who go through a application process and review by first year students, a interview process where the candidates are interviewed by a faculty member/staff member/and students, and then campus wide election. The two students who receive the most votes become homecoming royalty. Several years back, we moved from a “King” and “Queen” designation to “Royals” to ensure more inclusivity in the process.?

We start off Homecoming Week with an event that highlights all ten members fo ther court (which is really their only required participation in the week), and book end it with a on the field presentation at halftime of the Homecoming Game where our court is presented and the 2 Royals are announced. All court members receive a gift from the Alumni/Advancement Office for recognition.?

Happy to find a time to meet as well to share more details and what our process looks like so feel free to reach out to me! Happy to help!?

    Roll Wave!?

Hi we promote running for “Homecoming Royalty.” We’ve done away with Homecoming King/ Queen.?

Open up the opportunity only to recognized student organizations (clubs, honor societies, greek, etc.).?

Series of competitions and opportunities to fundraise for the student org.?

Competitions consist of physical, mental, participation, and creative elements so that we make sure to give everyone a fighting chance to win based on everyone’s strengths.?

Winners are determines by counting the points for all the competitions. Announced at the end of the HC basket ball game for us.?

the members of the student organizations are the candidates’ official court, but they can also invite other campus students to form part of their support team. This engages more students and gives smaller student orgs an opportunity to include more of their peers.?

Recognition: donation to their student org account, branded tshirts for members of their org, pizza party for a meeting of their choice, large photo of student org displayed in our student center, social media shoutout/ recognition.?
