Emergency Contraception Vending Machines
Posted by Su Hoon Tan on October 10, 2023 at 7:01 pmWashington state will be allocating funds for vending machines to dispense free or affordable emergency contraception and other sexual health products in 2024. My campus is exploring the possibility of putting a vending machine in the student union. This is still a fairly new trend in the nation as far as I can tell, and most of them are located in or managed by the school of pharmacy or health sciences.?
Does your campus have an emergency contraception machine, and if so:?
- where is it located?
- which department is managing the program?
- what are some operational and logistical concerns?

Protection Connection (a Health Center program) has “Hot Spots” across campus where you can obtain free condoms (latex free), lube, and dental dams. Four locations are in our student union. Two are public and two are in program offices. They are also available in the night time student shuttle “Duck Rides”. They can also be found at?the student recreation Center and at the Health Center.
They utilize a plexiglass box with an opening at the bottom for retrieving supplies that is mounted on the wall in the public locations.?
Our bookstore does have a health supplies vending machine that offers plan B as well as a number of other over the counter medical supplies. That is in our union building and is alongside our soda machines. They maintain the supplies.
The demand for the free supplies is steady and the Health Center has a hard time keeping up with restocking. When the public locations are out. Our students will ask for assistance getting resources from the program areas after hours. I have walked many a student down to those spaces get what they need.?
These programs have been in place for a few years.?

Hi Su Hoon,
I’ve attached a list provided by the American Society for Emergency Contraception of campuses providing vending machines with Plan B and other brands of emergency contraception in case you might want to do some targeted outreach.

Good morning.? We’ve had a vending machine at the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma) for about 7 years, which has almost always included emergency contraception.? The vending machine is directly across from our Counseling, Health, and Wellness Center which is in our student union building.? The vending machine is mostly managed by our student government who uses student fees to subsidize some of the products including emergency contraception.? However, one of our nurse practitioners typically consults on products that are in the vending machine.? Most of the operational concerns result in the sometimes fickle nature of a vending machine; but given its placement in our building, there are always concerns about privacy when making a purchase.? Let me know if you have other questions.
