    Hi all,

We are looking to create a new Welcome Week event that helps better connect our students with our city/external campus community. Not necessarily a Day of Service, but more in the idea of exposing students to the different businesses/restaurants/attractions in the community. I was wondering what other schools are doing something similar and if you have any tips or advice that you’ve experienced in the planning and execution of this? Would love to connect and hear your thoughts!

    Thanks,
    Adam

    Hi Adam!

Before the pandemic we were doing an event exactly like this! I believe we called it “Columbus Ambassadors,” and our target audience was all of the RAs, with the thought being that they could share what they learned/experienced with their residents. At some point we also expanded that audience to bring in RAs from other local campuses (Otterbein, Capital, etc.). We had a brief session with all of them in the ballroom, then sent them out on dozens of busses to sites all over the city.?

We haven’t brought that event back since the pandemic, but if you wanted to get more information on the behind the scenes process, Tracy would be a great starting point for you.

At Illinois State, our?Center for Civic Engagement hosts a Destination Uptown event during our Welcome Week. They utilize the Goosechase app to add an interactive scavenger hunt component to the event. We also have an “explore campus and community” tab on our Welcome Week webpage.

3-6 p.m. Destination Uptown, Center for Civic Engagement & Uptown Normal
Join the Center for Civic Engagement and Uptown Normal to get acquainted with your new community and explore all the potential Uptown Normal has for you – great food, entertainment, community resources, and employment near campus. Complete the scavenger hunt as you explore your new community, get freebies, and enjoy music in the Uptown Circle (4-6 p.m.). Start at the Center for Civic Engagement and wind your way through Uptown.
