Alcohol brought into facility
Posted by Mary Bahan on December 14, 2022 at 10:26 amHello,
Looking for feedback on how other unions deal with student sponsored events where guests and or student group members are bringing alcohol into the venue and consuming during the event.? ?
Thanks!

We allow it… but we don’t. No student groups are allowed to have alcohol at events on campus. That’s a University of Tennessee System rule–not just our specific campus. Departments and outside groups can request special permission from our Chancellor/President in certain areas of campus and there are some rules they have to follow:
The department/group must buy the alcohol personally or use a gift fund–not a procurement card to purchase all the alcohol beforehand.
There has to be a designated University representative there during the entire event.
Everyone gets their ID checked at the bar–and there has to be a designated bar area, not just a cooler with alcohol in it for anyone to go pick up.
The alcohol must be served by our catering staff, which all have their ABC license and know all the rules of what they can and can’t do.
If it is an outside group then their insurance policy goes up in the ‘risk factor’ column, so they may have to pay more for the policy they get.We have different rules for tailgating areas for students/guests during athletic events that we implemented this year if you’d like to see those as well.

Hi Mary,
Lindee, the alcohol policy for the System no longer exists as UTK now allows alcohol for students in certain situations, https://hilltopics.utk.edu/campus-policies-procedures/??
?
However, if an individual brings in alcohol on their own and it is witnessed by a staff member,? the alcohol is confiscated and the individual is reported to the Conduct Office. If the alcohol cannot be contributed to a specific individual, we report to the overarching office. Unfortunately and more times than not, it is a Greek organization, so we it is reported to our OSFL office and they handle the situation.——————————

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s alcohol service policy is contained in the Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Rehabilitation Programs procedure, located at https://www.tamucc.edu/governance/rules-procedures/assets/34.02.01.c1-drug-and-alcohol-abuse-and-rehabilitation-programs.pdf.??
Only our contracted food service provider (Chartwells) is allowed t serve alcohol at events through either a cash or open bar.? In theory, student orgs could host an event and serve alcohol, but none have.? Previous administration would not have approved it, but current would.? It just hasn’t happened yet.??
I have not heard of anyone bringing their own personal alcohol into an event in our facility.? If they did, our staff would notify UPD to handle and I assume they would have the individual pour it out (if not of age) or leave the facility and then refer to Student Conduct if necessary.
